Thank you for this most informative and well filmed video, so I shall be subscribing to your site.
This U-boat is in a open air museum in Bremerhaven, it's really great to visit and enter it
April 20 1944 hitler's birthday he was presented with a incomplete .type XX1 prototype ? kept afloat by bouyance bags baltic coast where they were manufactured was to be defended to the last by germany
I toured this boat three years ago. Amazing condition and so much roomier than a Type 7 or 9. You don't have access everywhere like the conning tower but great tour nonetheless.
I am yet to visit a WWII sub museum where it was allowed to see the tower. The only reason its possible in this video is because I arranged to visit outside normal opening hours :)
Huge Salute to your services. The Silent!
Did the type xxi & xxiii use the external radar-absorbant rubber coating that was used or trialed on earlier types?
I don't know for sure, but have never comes across this being the case. That being said, I dont think it would make sense as the boats were designed to sail submerged
@BecksHobbyProductions I'm sorry... I searched after asking. The coatings were on a few type viis hulls such as U-480 and were for sound (anti-asdic/sonar) But the type xxi & xxiii schnorkels were said to be covered with radar absorbant rubber with a pattern of squares applied. 👍
God video, men smid det københavner engelsk i havet
Det er nu engang den måde jeg taler :)
Excellent video, information, narration , and practical tour. Thank you.
Thank you very very much :)
The restoration is a work of art in itself. Great knowledge in low key narration. Aside from being on the wrong side, genius intrepid design. Whew...
Thanks for the great feedback :) Recording the narration is the part I struggle no most with so its great to hear that it does not show :)
*Nobody would ever call that thing a ... **_"Pig Boat."_*
Thank you for making this video. My Dad and I visited this boat when we were in Bremerhaven in 1975.
I hope my video enabled you to re-enjoy this museum :)
Where is the sick bay/ship medical area
To be honest I dont know for a fact, but my experience would suggest that any bunk/table would have to do...
Nice presentation. Glad Hitler jumped the shark and went too early in WW2. As it was, Berlin narrowly missed being nuked the dude was so crazy.
Check the dates when visiting. I turned up on a beautiful winter day to find it closed for the season 🙄
I hope you will get a chance some other day :)
Exceptional video. Thank you. 👍🏼⚓️ I think this will get you more “Subs” (pun intended 😉) and a million views.
Thanks :) The amount of new subs is already quite high! A million views is still far off though :)
My grandfather was a ww2 sailor. The ship he served on was nicknamed “the tricky jew”.
I hope you had a chance to hear him tell stories about how that was.
Your walkthroughs are great man. Also really enjoy the ambient sounds you add and your style of storytelling. I want to visit this boat one day.
Thats very kind of you to say. I do my best to deliver a high quality product. I dont know where you are in the world, but if you need to travel far, dont miss out on the U995 as well :)
Fantastic video, many thanks 👍🇬🇧
Thank you very much :) Im glad you enjoyed it
thx for the tour. well done!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is truly an AMAZING SUB FOR IT TIME and thanks for your a awesome tour......I JUST SUB'ED TO YOUR CHANNEL..... Old F-4 Phantom ll fighter jet pilot Shoe🇺🇸
Thanks! Always a pleasure to welcome anyone who served :)
The bridge offering a much higher level of protection for the crews makes little sense to me. Even if they survive a strafing enemy fighter, any depth charge or regular bomb that hit the boat could still sink it or damage it enough so that it could no longer dive.
The protection should be viewed from better cover and higher quality of cover. Also the sub was expected to travel submerged, expect when near friendly bases.
This sub is so cool! Imagine if the main toilet was busted and you had to shuffle past the crew quarters, get deafened by the diesels, squeeze between the big electric motors, then finally join the line for the restroom in the tiny cupboard at the back. Though I bet that's still better than being the two poor souls ordered into the pump room, wonder how they annoyed herr kaleun to get that job
On the type VII there was 2 toilets, but one was filled with provisions, so one left for all :D
Enjoyed the walk-through of this rare sub. Danke!
Glad you liked it :)
Very good video! The Type XXI and Type XXIII submarnies were the true sumbmarines themselves and the first moden conventional submarines. All current submarines are derived from them.. Germany did it once again!
It really was a leap forward and not an iteration :)
Had these boats arrived two years earlier, they could have made a difference in the naval warfare of World War II, but like the first operational jet aircraft, it was too late to make a difference. By late 1944 and early 1945, the war was all but lost. These submarines were in principle the first real submarines, whereas the previous submarines were actually just diving boats.
Significant increase in comfort? The maze of valves and pipes you could have bumped your self into; and just think the crew on these boats would move about with extreme speed and efficiency. Wow.
Well, the increase is in the context of the type VII. If you have not already, check out my tour of that one :)
What a Fantastic Video👌 Simply Brilliant 👍👍👍
Thank so much for the kind comment :)
nice soundbed
Thanks. The audio design is quite complicated, but important
This is a great video filled with lots of information. I really enjoyed it. Thank you I'm subscribed now.
Thanks :) I do try to include information which is interesting and adds context.
Thanks for this. Well paced and greatly informative tour.
Thanks for the great feedback. I learned early that slow pace is key to make this work :)
Excellent tour and video of a truly amazing boat.
Thanks :) Im glad your enjoyed the tour!
very well done, sir! 💪
Thank you :) I do my best with what I have
Compared to US fleet type boats, this boat is a Luxury Liner.. Thank you for a very thorough walk through !
And the US boats were luxury liners compared to the type VII :) Thanks for the great feedback!
Very interesting, thanks!
Thanks! Sometimes there is more to history than we think :)
A very informative video! Thank you.
Thanks - glad you enjoyed it :)
If Doenitz had this at the beginning of the war things may have been a lot different in Europe today .
The higher level of protection should be seen in the context of cover and the quality of cover. That being said, it was also expected to only travel on the surface near friendly bases and rivers.
Seeing this video brought a lot of nostalgia for me i was last on that submarine about 10-15 years ago seeing it now again is amazing. Someday im going to visit it again in real life in Bremerhaven when i have the time.
Its really a great museum and they are working hard to keep it in a good shape.
Very nice production.
Thanks my friend :)
Looks like it was tossed together without planning. Also looks like it was just abandoned with pots & pans left where they lay when the crew left. Funny that the “crew” are wearing masks. The silly background noises are not realistic.
Excellent video, thanks for posting it. I served aboard the British Porpoise and Oberon class boats in the '70s-'80s, both types were built post ww2 and their design was much influenced by technology from the captured German U-boats. Very interesting comparisons and contrasts between them. I could see a lot that was the same.
Thanks for the feedback :) I hope to create a video of the Oberon class in the future.
This also applied to the first US nuclear submarines. The first US nuclear submarine, the "Nautilus", was built according to the principle of XXI technology. Unfortunately, after the war the USSR also captured some half-finished boats and, above all, construction plans in occupied East Germany, so that the West's technological lead did not last long. The conventional Whisky class submarines of the USSR were almost 1:1 copies of Type XXI technology.
Looks like it would take a long time to build...a
Being 6ft 4 i never fancied being a submariner, although there was a Captain of a famous 4 man ' X ' craft who was my height. Having seen the one in Gosport, near where i live in Portsmouth, he must've had lack of claustrophobia.I just watched your very informed walk through of a mk vii U Boot, now i find this, only uploaded yesterday. Subbed and liked.
Thanks 👍 Welcome
La Espadon (in St Nazaire, France) which is a copy of the type XXI has the torpedo loading system in place, I'm sure it could be copied.
I was not aware, but have shared this with the museum
Germany should have held off invading Russia.. They would have jets, missiles, ballistic rockets, real subs, homing rockets anti air, air to air/ground. We would all speak German now
While many innovations came out of Germany, its not possible to innovate to victory.
Thank you. Very interesting and informative.
Thanks for the kind comments 😊
Great job and thank you for making this video. 👍
Thank you very much. In large part these projects are a labour of love 😊
100 built very few in service.
Nice video, but could have spared us for the sound effects.
That's a creative choice I make 😊 Some love it, some don't 🙃
Lucky for us that Adolf had disapproved funds and resources for the development of the typeXXI in 1941, when he was first presented with the plans for the new type. However, he had stated that the existing boat classes were doing a good enough job and a new class was not necessary and the resources needed for the development of this new type, were needed elsewhere more urgently. Then of course, when presented with a new situation of the older boat classes not being adequate anymore, an emergency development and production program was launched, which of course came too late. Had the type XXI been introduced in 1943 instead of 1945, the outcome of the battle of the Atlantic may well have been different and just maybe would have changed the outcome of the war. Lucky for us that Adolf was shortsighted
The type XXI suffered from the same limitations as the other subs : they needed to find the convoys in the first place. Furthermore, they required more resources to build, which would have resulted in fewer boats. In the end, my personal opinion, Germany lost because they had to fight 2 resourceful nations : Russia and the US. More than 99% of all merchant ships operating in the North Atlantic reached their destination between September 1945 and May 1945.
As both a sub enthusiast, and an ex RCN destroyer stoker, I really enjoyed that .T/Y
Thank you very much!
Boy, she’s downright gorgeous, both outside and in. Looks uncharacteristically roomy inside, is that due to the way she’s currently set up or is there really that much room indoors?
The layout in the forward crew area was redesigned when she was raised in 1957, so that area will feel more roomy compared to the original layout (I have the floor plans for both). However everything aft of that area is generally as original as far as space goes.
